Born in London in 1962. He grew up on the Somerset Levels, with the Severn Estuary to the West and Lowland Peat Moor inland. His diverse background has been characterized by his attention being captured by the extraordinary, special projects and challenges.

In 1981, he studied for the newly introduced Environmental Studies 'A' Level and when on to obtain a Diploma of Higher Education and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science with Commendation. He qualified to start a PhD in Environment Impact Assessment in 1988, but personal circumstance did not allow its completion.

He presently owns and runs a number of small businesses, St Margarets Landscaping, St Margarets Gardening, Running Red Ltd and The River Thames Visitor Centre and Cafe. In the past he has written, published and marketed a book called "How to have an Easy Life". All sold by Waterstones and Harrods.

Other employment has been a Civil Servant administering the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, qualifying to Scientific Officer Grade and also as a biological site surveyor for the Somerset Trust for Nature Conservation.

His hobbies include a range of activities including Golf (Handicap 7), Badminton (County player), Musician (Guitar and songwriter), Voluntary Work (London Waterways Commissioner), and adviser to the Major's office on River Thames Issues.
